2017 Anime Recap

It’s been a very mixed bag of a year so you might need some help sifting through it all.

Shokugeki no Soma Season 3

The continuation of Soma’s quest to conquer the world’s toughest culinary school. More amazing food porn and we finally find out why Erina is such a bitch!

Fate/Apocrypha

Like Fate/Stay Night, but on speed. You won’t know what’s going on for ages but the constant gorgeous fight scenes more than make up for it. Don’t have Crunchyroll? The first 12 eps are on Netflix!

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

A dragon takes up the life of a housemaid. There’s definitely a market for this one, it aint me though.

Juuni Taisen

Despite the fairly boring premise, Juuni Taisen is one of the better shows this season. A battle royale between 12 super powered zodiac warriors takes some surprising turns and keeps you guessing until the end.

Inuyashiki

The tale of an out of luck salaryman who gets cancer. Thankfully he’s soon after accidentally killed by aliens and is revived into an alien combat droid. Sounds mental but definitely one of the best shows this year.

Made in Abyss

My pick for anime of the year. An unfathomably deep Abyss filled with incredible beasts and relics of a fallen civilization draws adventurers from around the world to descend in search of glory. Possibly the best animated and most heartfelt series I’ve seen in ages. I found myself thinking about it for weeks after the finale and humming the soundtrack for even longer than that.

Kakegurui

Highschool kids gambling and enjoying it waaay too much.

Little Witch Academia

An anime based on the Little Witch Academia short films. A girl from a non-magical family struggles to make it in a school of magic elitists in the hope of becoming a great witch like her childhood idol. Also on Netflix so check it out.

Granblue Fantasy

An anime series companion for the mobile app by Square Enix. A likable rag tag gang traverses a beautiful fantasy world to defeat an evil empire, generic but fun.

Youjo Senki

Isekai from before everyone knew the word isekai and decided they no longer liked isekai. A sociopathic atheist picks a fight with god. Naturally the god takes umbrage at this and reincarnates him in a battle-torn world to test his faith. Add in WW2 parallels and magic and you’ve got a pretty decent show.

Boku no Hero Academia Season 2

Deku strives to live up to the heroic legacy of his hero and mentor, All Might. New villains arise and heroes are forced to confront their inner demons. A fairly solid season and stays true to the manga.

Knight’s and Magic

A mecha-fanatic dies accidentally and is reincarnated in a world with actual mechs as compensation. He then uses his superior knowledge of science and coding (not kidding) to make the greatest mech ever. Dumb fun but fun nonetheless.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! Season 2

Kazuma and his harem of dysfunctional heroines are just as entertaining the second time round. Megumin is still best girl.

Black Clover

Yelling, lots and lots of yelling. If you can get past that you might enjoy this slow moving, extremely derivative shonen anime. I’m probably being too hard on it considering how much people like the manga.

Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul

Taking place 10 years after the events of Shingeki no Bahamut: Gensis, a half-dragon girl goes on a journey of self discovery and is embroiled in a war to save all of existence. Not as good as the Genesis but decent enough.

Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2

The mystery of the Titans deepens further and the Survey Corps uncovers secrets that shake the foundations of the walls themselves.

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Gaiden: Sword Oratoria

An anime set parallel to the original Danmachi season. Lacking the polish of the original and adding little to the overall story are a couple of it’s downfalls. Mediocre but maybe you’ve got enough spare time to fit it in.

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu

Famous swords from Japanese history are brought to life and sent back in time to fight a spirit army hell bent on altering history. Worth watching if you like bishi drama or good fight scenes.

So there it is, not a bad bunch and a few I’ll be rewatching for sure.
